Russian-style massage's benefits

Russian massage is based on techniques that have been used extensively in Russia for over 100 years, and is based on the philosophy that through massage the body can learn to heal, relax and repair itself. Russian massage uses many unusual techniques, but interestingly they use similar terms to Swedish massage.

So for example they use the terms friction and tapotement, but the techniques they use are very different to those used in other styles of massage. The Russian massage style of tapotement is less intrusive than the Swedish style, covers a larger surface area and is used to increase blood flow to the muscles. Russian massage also uses some friction techniques, both that are very deep tissue styles of massage.

The “sawing” technique is an intense style of massage that adds a lot of heat to the muscles and is helpful for chronic muscular problems. The cresting technique is also unique to this style of massage and again is a friction technique. Often used in sports massage, this technique again provides heat to the muscles. Raking is also a common technique and is used along the erector spinae muscles and also the intercostals muscles, allowing for deep tissue manipulation of these muscles. However there are also some very gentle, relaxation styles of massage in the Russian style including the rocking of the body.

During this style of massage, the client’s body is often moved and rocked with the therapist using the client’s body to massage. So when massaging the muscles in the calf, the therapist will pick up the leg and rock it back and forth, using the weight of the muscle to massage the attachment points. This allows for a less intrusive style of massage and allows the massage therapist to work with the body, not against it.

All of the techniques including friction and cresting use the weight of the therapists body to provide the massage, rather than stressing the therapists thumbs and hands.

Russian massage is also known as being very easy on the therapist’s body and therefore helps extend the therapists working life. It does not use thumbs at all – and a large part of the massage is protection of the therapist’s body.

Russian therapists believe that sometimes giving 50% energy to a client will have a better effect than giving 100%. This style of massage has developed in Russia over the last 100 years and is used extensively in hospitals, with patients often being prescribed a series of massages during their stay.

Similarly, doctors in Russia use massage therapy in their treatment of patients. Russian massage has been rarely seen in the West and is not commonly available.

Ripple Massage’s website has much information on day spa Tamborine and is the one mobile massage therapy business in Australia that offers Russian massage to its clients. Operating in Queensland, NSW and Victoria, clients are able to access this unique and rare style of massage that not only allows for deep relaxation but is deeply therapeutic. Toe Walking in Children

Kids that toe walk may or may not be a problem. The most common reason that children walk on their toes is because they are short and they want to be taller. If they can easily get their heels to the ground and they achieved all the normal developmental milestones and there is no family history, then there is probably no need to be concerned.

If a child gets to around 3 and they are toe walking, then they probably should be checked out as it can be sign of some other things going on. The most common cause is what is known as idiopathic or habitual toe walking and very little is known about the cause. A very short Achilles tendon or calf muscle can also cause it. Conditions like cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy can also cause it, due to a spasticity in the calf muscles. Autism and other related types of learning disorders can also cause toe walking. In these cases, the importance of a thorough assessment of those children who do toe walk is obviously important due to the potential seriousness of the underlying disease process.

Any treatment for toe walking will be directed at the cause. If it is the habitual type or due to tight calf muscles, the treatment will vary from stretching exercises to night splints to a brace that the need to wear most of the time. Sometimes a surgical lengthening of the Achilles tendon is done. Another option is to place the foot and leg in a serious of casts to progressively stretch out the tendon. Toe walking can also be prevented by the use of Botox injections to paralyse the calf muscles. This is particularly helpful in those with cerebral palsy. If the toe walking issue due to problems such as autism, then there are behavioural interventions that have been shown to be helpful.

For the latest on toe walking see the toe walking threads at Podiatry Arena. If you have some questions about toe walking ask at the Foot Health Forum

Would You Recognise A Panic Attack?

Anxiety attacks, or panic attacks as they are more or less the same thing, are on the increase. Who knows whether it’s our modern more stressful way of life or not. Still, they are increasing and causing more and more people some serious grief.

Could you spot if you were having a panic or anxiety attack? Not a simple question to answer because symptoms can vary from the downright petrifying to almost unnoticeable. You may just experience a hot sweat or you may experience an attack where you can’t breath and your heart races out of control.

I guess if you were having the second type of symptom you’d be very aware you need help to put this right. If your symptoms are mild though, you may not even realise it’s a panic or anxiety attack. This could be a warning sign that things are about to get worse, much worse.

The first (bad) panic attack my wife suffered was actually while she was driving. I probably needn’t say that it wasn’t just the attack that shook her badly, but the fact she was driving and could have had a major accident. This scenario just doesn’t bear thinking about.

If you’ve been having a few strange moments lately, maybe even experiencing one or more of the following… Difficulty sleeping, a bit on edge or anxious, can’t concentrate, constantly irritated or fidgeting a lot. These symptoms could well be a sign of things to come. Things much worse.

Before you actually get into a panic about these symptoms let me assure you there are many things that can cause these symptoms. And you shouldn’t worry about them. Too much caffeine can stop you sleeping. Uncomfortable clothing can cause you to fidget.

If you would rather be safe than sorry you can find out if you are heading for anxiety attacks. A panic (anxiety) symptoms test will give you a better idea of whether you are at risk. The test involves answering yes or no to a few questions and adding your score up at the end.

Then you can make the choice to take further action or not. There’s an anxiety (panic) symptoms test here.

High Field Stand-Up MRI vs. the Traditional “older technology” Open MRI

Washington Open MRI now has the world’s only high field full-body Open MRI scanner that can scan patients in the sitting or standing position – the “position of pain”.

Our new Stand-Up Open MRI technology allows you to watch your favorite TV shows during your Open MRI scan!
Fear of claustrophobia or being squeezed into a tube is non-existent in our totally open MRI scanner.

Washington Open MRI’s Stand-Up Open-MRI is the world’s only Patient-Friendly™ scanner.
Our Open MRI technology is toally open and accessible!

This technological breakthrough is second to none in the MRI imaging world, and fully reimbursed by all insurance carriers at no additional cost to the patient.

The revolutionary scanner features the only MRI-compatible, motorized, multi-positional, patient positioning system, which has been engineered to be fully functional Inside the scanner’s magnetic field. It can position the patient for the conventional “lie-down” MRI scanning, or upright for weight-bearing studies. The full length of the spine can be imaged in the normal weight-bearing posture, even with the patient touching their toes for full fexion images of the lumbar spine. Unusual patient positions that are impossible on the older-technology “lie-down” MRI scanners are routine on Washington Open MRI’s new Stand-Up Open MRI.

The patient positioning system is tilted back slightly (approximately five degrees) in order to stabilize the patient and avoid body motion during stand-up scanning. Patients can be positioned facing the poles, which enables a large range of motion for scans of the shoulder. Scans can also be obtained with lateral flexion of the lumbar spine NO OTHER MRI can perform this diagnostic procedure. This new Stand-Up Open MRI is based on FONAR’s proven high-field technology, and FONAR is the PATENT HOLDER for MRI scanning technology – all others license this proprietary technology fror their MRI equipment. So who do you think will always be at “the cutting edge”.The combination of the transaxial magnetic field and any of FONAR’s array of high signal-to-noise solenoidal surface coils is one of the key reasons why the new Stand-Up Open MRI is second-to-none in image quality. Its full range of advanced software features and state-of-the-art pulse sequences provide unparalleled diagnostic precision.

In Modern Medicine…

Often an upright position is the only position in which the patient’s symptoms occur. Certain cardiovascular and neurological disorders can only be properly diagnosed when the patient is upright. The same is true of the GI tract and the spine and joints, including hips, knees and ankles. Coupled with MRI’s unparalleled ability to “see” soft tissues, Stand-Up Open MRI gives physicians an unprecedented view of pathology and its impact on function.

From the perspective of medicine, Stand-Up Open MRI provides a dramatic view of the body’s interior. For the first time, Washington Open MRI brings to the medical practice the newfound ability to see all the body’s organs and tissues in their normal position of function – upright.

This technological breakthrough is second to none in the MRI imaging world, and fully reimbursed by all insurance carriers at no additional cost to the patient.

Preventing ulcers with wheelchair cushion

A wheelchair cushion is one of the most important accessories used in a wheelchair. It prevents pressure ulcers and increases body comfort and support. A lot of research and technology development goes into developing wheelchair cushions.

The results are remarkable and because of this, there is a wide range of products to choose from which makes it even more difficult to decide on a particular wheelchair cushion. Major factors which determine the kind of cushion that a user may need are weight, sitting balance, type and extent of injuries, how much time is spent on the wheelchair, etc.

An ideal wheelchair cushion should easily assume the shape of the person, distribute the person’s weight uniformily and must not create any pressure points. Slipping from the wheelchair should be prevented. Slipping of wheelchair cushion could lead to a lot of undesirable consequences like rashes, sores etc., also leading to affect the activities of a person.

Various different types of materials are used make these cushions, having their own benefits and shortcomings. Generally, a wheelchair cushion should be water proof and shock proof so that user can easily move around in tougher terrain and weather conditions.

Selecting the right material is the first vital step, when you go for a good wheelchair cushion. There are mainly three types of materials:

Foam cushion

It is basically made out of polyurethane. They are typically lightweight, low maintenance and they vary widely in stiffness and density. Sometimes they can get hot and damaged by moisture and light, so a protective cover is often used to cover them. Foam cushion absorbs the impacts well, which is very helpful in the case collision with other objects. They are cheaper than other wheelchair cushions.

Gel cushion

As its name implies, it’s made with gel on the sitting side, and foam on the other side. This wheelchair cushion distributes weight evenly which effectively diminishes pressure on one single area. It also transfers heat effectively.

Air cushion

It is composed of many pockets of air which are interconnected so that the air is quickly transferred from one pocket to the next. Also air cushions can be modified to relieve pressure on a sensitive part of the body. This cushion should be checked for air leaks regularly.

Hybrid cushion

It is a wheelchair cushion which combines two or more of the materials from above. The basic thought behind is that you can easily compensate one material’s weakness with the other material strength.

Finally, right wheelchair cushion is selected after trying different brands and self experience.

Any Exercises For Carpal Tunnel Relief

Do you have any idea what carpal tunnel syndrome is? If your job requires you to do a lot of typing on the keyboard or if you are a bank teller and you also use the same hand to do the same job everyday, you should be aware of this. Carpus is a word derived from the Greek word “karpos” which means “wrist.” The wrist is surrounded by a band of fibrous tissue that normally functions as a support for the joint. The tight space between this fibrous band and the wrist bone is called the carpal tunnel. When your thumb, index and middle finger get irritated and numb because of the usual function, you should need a carpal tunnel relief because it might already be a carpal tunnel syndrome.

Some of the relief that are promoted or shared on the Internet are medications but not the synthetics ones, but the herbal and healthy one. In one blog, he has shared something about green tea being used as a good reliever for tired hands. What one who has a sort of carpal tunnel syndrome is to boil green tea and then, put it in a large pan, large enough for two hands and put the hot tea and let it cool for a minute or so or until the heat is tolerable. Then, soak the hands in that warm water mixed with green tea. But there are others who would go for the right exercises for carpal tunnel syndrome and those exercises can be found on book guides created for the purpose of teaching people to get rid of carpal tunnel syndrome the healthiest and safest way possible without using anything, not even medications.

You might find some other web sites out there that tells about exercises for sciatica but the greatest exercises can be read inside this book. If you really want to have the healthiest, the safest and the most natural carpal tunnel cure, you should try to look into this right now.

The fifth most common complaint that physicians have from the patient is to do with low back pain. There is a general consensus that if you have a problem with your back then you are stuck with it for the rest of your life. If you have a back problem it can be very debilitating. If your back pain is that bad, you may not even be able to work. Your sporting career can be severely curtailed or indeed may have to be stopped altogether. You will maintain a great posture and balance if you regularly work out. You should go easy at the beginning of your back workouts you can increase the weight as your stamina and strength increase.

Natural Leg Syndrome Remedies

Is it difficult for you to sit on an airplane seat because your legs are all jiggery and you feel uncomfortable? Don’t you have enough sleep every night because of your legs which are always restless? If you answered “yes” to these or any of the two questions, you are having what they call as RLS or Restless Leg Syndrome. This kind of malady is an uncomfortable feeling in the legs at usually “wrecks havoc” when you are in a very relaxed mood or when you go to sleep at night. To give you a clear picture, if you see a man sitting and his legs are always shaking, sometimes only one leg, then, he has RLS. For a lot of people, it is not something serious but for those with restless leg syndrome, it would be very disturbing for them. Well, instead of going to the doctor, they can opt to find a natural restless leg treatment and that’s the best treatment that one can have for RLS.

So, what are the best natural treatments? For some people, what they do is they would go to a chiropractic expert to get rid of this very annoying problem especially when they find their restless leg syndrome becoming worse and sometimes, all too painful. But there are some conservative restless leg syndrome remedies that one may want to know in order to get rid of that predicament and you know what are those? All you need to do is to adapt a healthy lifestyle and everything that comes with the package- eat a lot of healthy foods, get a good regular exercise, sleep early, wake up early, drink lots of water, go easy on alcohol drinks or none at all, if you smoke, stop smoking.

When it comes to healthy eating and when it comes to looking for some other restless leg treatment like medications or drugs, it’s also best to go to your doctor first and let him prescribe something.

The Exercises That Can Help You Recover! – Rotator Cuff Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy Exercises for the Knees

Are you struggling with an injury to your shoulder and you are trying to recover? Do you need to go through rotator cuff physical therapy to help you get through a shoulder injury that is driving you crazy? There are many things that you can do if you want to help yourself recover from shoulder pain. Here are some of the things you have to do in order to recover from your injury.

The first thing you will probably have to do is put together a schedule for your rotator cuff physical therapy. This will have to have some exercises that help to build up the muscles that are around your shoulders. Some of these muscles are very small and need to be worked on so that you can get back to the normal type of life without shoulder pain that you want to live.

The physiotherapist teaches elderly patients a set of simple exercises which can be carried out by these seniors on their own at home like gentle stretching exercises for a few minutes daily. They will also recommend a diet high in fruit and vegetables so that they do not put on the weight that they have lost through exercise.

Physical therapy for a frozen shoulder is likewise best performed under the guidance of a therapist with experience in this area. Just because a therapist has a license doesn’t mean they can provide the best treatment plan. One is best served to do a little investigation about a therapist’s credentials and experience before blindly following his or her lead.

The last thing you need is you need a program that is set up with proper exercises to help you recover faster than you thought possible. Sure you can talk to your doctor about this, but they will only be able to give you a few exercises.

You could go to a physical therapist, but this will cost you a good chunk of money and they will give you the same exercises you can get from one of the many guides to recovering from a rotator cuff injury.

Picking the Perfect Wheelchairs that Suit Your Lifestyle

The design and functionality of the peripherals of wheelchairs have to be secured for quality and durability. They should be able to offer appropriate support and comfort for users. With the latest technology and industrial design trends, more and more types are produced to suit the requirements of various users with different lifestyles. Now, they come in different sizes, functions, and styles to offer the required enhancements for the varying demands in the market.

Self-propelling wheelchairs fit those who are independently pushing themselves for movement. This type requires bigger wheels so that it would only take minimal force on the user’s part to maneuver the chair. On the other hand, if there is an attendant or a nurse caring for the patient, a self-propelling wheelchair with small wheels is still the best to use. This could give enough support to the patient and at the same time, give ample control for the attendant to maneuver the chair.

For those wheelchair users who go to various places and only have the chair for emergency purposes, folding wheelchairs are a great choice. As the name implies, you can easily fold and store the wheelchair in smaller spaces like the trunk of a car or a cabinet. Since its parts and peripherals can easily be detached, you can literally bring the chair anywhere. If you need to travel for hours, you need not worry about the space that the chair might occupy. Folding ones are also lighter than the usual self-propelling or transient ones, so you can be sure that they can easily be moved in and out of the storage.

A lot of wheelchair users are leading dynamic lifestyles and are still very much into physical activities like sports. Being unable to walk should not be a problem for them if they want to enjoy their passion for such endeavors. This is why sport wheelchairs are widely manufactured. A sport wheelchair is the enhanced version of a traditional wheelchair with more durable and not so heavy materials. Traditional wheelchairs are generally made of aluminum while the ones made for sport use titanium. The latter is also designed differently from the traditional self-propelling ones. They do not come with an armrest or handles. They are built to be wider and shorter for them to be closer to the center of gravity. This would prevent the wheelchair from being imbalanced when the game gets more physical. Those made for sports are also easier for the user to maneuver and they can also be customized to provide the specifications of the user.

Before purchasing a wheelchair, it is advisable to consider the user’s needs first. Because wheelchairs are an extension of a user’s limbs, they are supposed to offer optimal support and comfort.
